In vitro fertilization treatment is the most popular method of assisted conception and involves fertilizing a woman’s eggs outside her body under controlled laboratory conditions and replacing the embryos back into the uterus. IVF was initially designed as the treatment for women with irreparable fallopian tubes. It is now frequently used as a treatment option for couples with other types of fertility problems such as sub optimal sperm, adulatory disorders, endometriosis and unexplained infertility.

Fertility clinics tend to follow the same IVF process but apply their own subtle variations to the process to achieve their success rate. Success rates do vary widely throughout the country from 10% to a 58% live birth success rate; the average is 25-30%. This means that over three quarters of couples may be unsuccessful in conceiving a child with IVF. From my experience it is how the clinic tailors the process to each couples situation that distinguishes a successful clinic from a less successful clinic. No one woman responds the same way to the fertility drugs as the next and by continually tweaking the process throughout the treatment cycle seems to be the main factor in maximising a couples chance of pregnancy. No one likes to be treated like a number and feel like there are on the same production line as everyone else, which often happens!
