What are sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s)?

Infections that can be spread via sexual contact. The most common are chlamydia, genital warts gonorrhea, herpes, syphilis, and infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

If left untreated, some STD’s can have serious consequences on a women’s fertility. Infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea ascend from the uterus to the fallopian tube causing damage to the structure of the tube and the tiny hairs (cilia) lining it. One result of damaged cilia is an ectopic pregnancy. When the infections spread into the uterus, ovaries and surrounding tissue it is a serious infection called Pelvic Inflamatory Disease (PID).

Up to 40% of untreated lower genital tract infections progress to more serious PID.
