What is ovarian reserve?
The female fertility test measures the level of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) present in first morning urine on Day 3 of her period (Day 3 FSH test). The level of FSH is an indicator of Ovarian Reserve, a key element of female fertility. The test measures for a normal FSH level, as described in the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) guideline and is the only at-home FSH test appropriate for fertility screening.
Why is it important?
If I were restricted to one piece of advice, it would be that a woman should find out her reproductive capability by assessing her ovarian reserve with this test in her 30’s. FSH levels rise as a woman ages and women with abnormal FSH levels can have considerable difficulty conceiving with their own eggs. By having this test it may provide the evidence needed to either start trying for a baby straightaway or to delay having a baby until later.
In 2001, a study measured the ovarian reserve of 10,000 women of all ages. 10% of the women had abnormal ovarian reserve (raised FSH levels). In this group there were only 28 pregnancies (2.7% of patients) with 20 of them (71%) ending in miscarriage. Only 8 women with raised FSH had a baby. This confirms that regardless of age, an abnormal ovarian reserve result indicates a dramatic decrease in the ability to have a child.
How to test your egg reserve
The Fertell female fertility test is conducted similarly to an at-home pregnancy test. On Day 3 of the woman’s period, using first morning urine, place the absorbent tip in the urine stream for 5 seconds. FSH in the urine reacts with antibodies on the test strip and shows as a red line in the result window. The intensity of this line reflects the FSH concentration (the darker the line, the more FSH present in urine.

The test will indicate if the level of FSH is within the normal range. If it is above the normal range, the ability to conceive may be decreased and may benefit from medical assistance. Doctors agree that early detection of fertility issues can significantly increase your chances of becoming pregnant.
The female test is complete in about 30 minutes
