
Over the years, Simon and I have tried them most of them with varying degrees of success. The plan we find the easiest to incorporate into our daily lives and work patterns is a 3-day juice detox. The main benefits are the speed at which toxins are eliminated from the body, the results are almost immediate and it seems a lot has been achieved in a short period of time compared to other programmes. The longer detoxes are gentler and can take weeks for the benefits to realise. For Simon and I it is easy to take 3 days out of our busy lives to focus solely on this task, typically starting on a Friday morning and by Sunday night the benefits are apparent leaving us ready to start the wholefood diet the following week. I recommend this approach however if you feel happier completing another type of detox, please do! The most important factor is that the body is cleansed of the harmful toxins prior to starting the wholefood preconception plan.
Detoxing claims to encourage the body’s natural self-cleansing mechanisms and gives the digestive system a much-needed rest. Body organs like the kidneys, the skin, the liver, the lungs and the lymphatic system all benefit from the removal of unwanted toxins. It helps clear out your system of the toxins; a fast track method to a healthier YOU so you can approach babymaking with more energy, more efficient immune system and knowledge that you have done all you can do HEALTHWISE!

For this 3 – day ‘detox’ you will need:
· Dry skin brush
· Juicer
· Lots and lots of organic raw fruit and vegetables like apples, pears, carrots, bananas, greens, spinach, celery.
· Psyllium husk powder (available at pharmacies, health food shops)
· Bentonite (available at pharmacies, health food shops)
· Herbal teas (e.g. nettle, camomile, lemon and ginger)
Depending on how toxic your body is depends on how you will feel. If you and your partner drank tea and coffee, smoked every day, drank a bottle of wine each night and ate TV dinners, you may feel absolutely terrible by about Day 3 when all the toxins are circulating in your bloodstream having purged from the cells, tissues and muscles of your body. Headaches, tiredness, lethargic, feeling cranky and emotional are common symptoms. It is essential to drink plenty of water – 2 litres a day to help eliminate the toxins from the body. Between Day 5 – 7 you will feel much better. Your eyes will sparkle, your skin will glow and you will feel totally energised. Having been through the detox and seeing the outcome, you will hopefully be adverse to ingesting any more toxins and falling into your old habits. On day 4 aim to start the wholefood diet and maintain this eating plan for up to 3 months until you have had another hair mineral analysis done or conceived a baby.

Drink warm hot water with ginger or lemon
Dry skin brushing unblocks the pores and stimulates the lymphatic system to transport toxins to the liver and kidney.
7.30am – Colon sweep shake
Put 2 teaspoons of volcanic bentonite in 150ml of water. Shake until the lumps have dissolved, add 2 teaspoons of psyllium husk powder. Top up with apple juice until 500ml. Shake well and drink immediately. The volcanic bentonite attracts the toxins and the psyllium husk powder binds it to aid removal from the body.
Drink herbal tea anytime (you can also boil raw ginger and mix with organic honey or lemon)
10am- Detox Juice
Use juicer to make 1 large pitcher (about 2 pints) of juice. Choose from one of the following options. Apples and pears or apples and carrots or carrot and orange.

11.30am – Colon shake (as above)
1.30pm – Detox juice (as above)
3pm – Colon shake (as above)
2 – 6pm – Spend this time relaxing: reading, walking, yoga, swimming
6.30pm – Dinner
Hot potassium vegetable broth – Each night make this broth fresh. Add potatoes, greens, celery, kelp (if available) and green vegetables to a large pan of boiling water. Bring to the boil, simmer for at least half an hour. Put in blender until a puree consistency and add hot filtered water until it is a watery broth. ENJOY as much as possible. Add raw grated garlic, ginger or lemon to enhance the taste
9.30pm – Take enema
Enema kits can be bought from most pharmacies. This will help the body eliminate the daily toxic matter that has accumulated in your bowels. If you are not happy to do this, then just gently massage your stomach and lower abdomen each night. OPTIONAL – At the end of the 3 day detox you may see additional benefits if you have colonic irrigation. Again seek medical advice from a nutritionist or GP is you have not done this before or are concerned about your health.
Throughout the day drink at least 1.5 litres of water in addition to the juice and herbal teas to help flush out the toxins. Try to get at least eight hours sleep, listen to your body, if you have a headache or are feeling unwell lie down to give your body a chance to complete the cleansing process.
At the end of day 3, start preparing yourself for the beginning of the wholefood diet. The first day after the detox eat light easily digestable foods like salads and fish as it avoids putting too much strain on the digestive system straight away. Avoid dairy and wheat for a couple of days. You may still be feeling sluggish which may indicate your body is quite toxic and may take a few more days of very light eating to complete the process. The good news is, you are cleansing your body; the toxins are coming out!
